PRETTY IN…WHATEVER COLOUR YOU WANT! 7 TOP TIPS FOR CHOOSING COLOUR IN YOUR LIVING ROOM.

7 top tips

Paint paralysis: the considerable amount of fear one has in choosing the wrong colours for their home. Sound familiar?

Research suggests that about 18 decillion colours exist, and the human eye can distinguish up to 10 million of them; no wonder it’s so hard to choose the perfect colour combination for your home!

There are lots of different coloured related tips and tricks when it comes to decorating – take a look at our 7 top tips to help you build your dream living room.

In a colour crisis? Fear not, we have you covered!

Mind your mood

Ask yourself: “How do I want to feel when I walk into my living room?”

Believe it or not, colours have the power to make us feel happy, sad, relaxed, angry and even hungry! The tone, tints, and shades you choose for your hub will also sway your mood but don’t get all flustered deciding between eggplant, boysenberry, or mauve purples. To put it simply, cool colours (greens, blues, and purples) tend to elicit calmness and relaxation, whereas warmer colours (reds, oranges, and yellows) are more likely to evoke feelings of love, passion, and energy.

Thinking about the vibe you want to create in that room might be helpful. Consider orange and red if you want your living room to be a sociable space. Still, if you’d prefer it to be a place you can throw your leopard print comfies on, melt into the sofa and unwind after a long day, green and blue tones are probably more for you.

When it’s tight, think white

Struggling for space? There’s a variety of shades that can give off the illusion that your four walls appear more prominent than ever. Taking it back to high school biology basics: white reflects the light, black absorbs it. Therefore, to open up a space, we recommend eggshell whites, creams, or pastel shades to give the room a light and airy feel.

60-30-10 Rule

This three-numbered wonder is a timeless trick that will help you achieve a well-balanced living room. Three ratios, three colours. Simple.

Your 60% is the dominant hue in the room, your ‘base.’ This tends to work best if you use neutral colours; we recommend using this for walls, windowsills, and lights.

The 30% is your complementary colour. This should be a slightly louder colour displayed on your chairs, rugs, and sofas (or, should we say, Zofa’s) that still supports the primary colour.

The last 10% is your chance to be creative. Here you can play around with bolder colours in the form of artwork, sofa throws, or even flowers. We recommend using scatter cushions (you can find some here) with a pop of colour as a great way to brighten up a room without taking up much space.

Get into the green scene

Not only is green one of the most popular colours this season, but it also has many psychological properties that make it the perfect colour to splatter all over your living room this year.

Us humans associate the colour green with feelings of safety, security, and tranquillity, so if you’re looking for a zen den, we’d recommend a deep relaxing teal paired with creamy neutrals for a refreshingly elegant look.

Alternatively, bring mother nature indoors. Studies show that plants can help to reduce physiological and psychological stress, so not only do they look great, but they do great too. Seems like a no-brainer to us.

Order a swatch – it’s free!

Your sofa is the main event in the room. You, your loved ones, and your furry friends all revolve around the sofa – even if that does mean arguing over who gets to sit in the corner seat!

That’s why it’s a perfect place to begin when choosing colours in your living room. Check out our range of fabric and colour samples here, select the ones you love, pair it against a few pieces of furniture and build from there! After you’ve chosen your dream sofa, we’d recommend choosing a rug and a few pieces of art to bring it all together.

Accent wall

An accent wall is a great way to add a bit of personality to your living room!

Painting one wall a different colour from the rest allows you to experiment with bolder colours without overwhelming the room. The accent wall should be the first wall you see when you walk into a room or behind the focal point of your living room. An accent wall can also offer separation in a room without having to add any physical barriers – extremely practical if you’re looking for a multipurpose living room.

Triadic colour scheme

A triadic colour scheme will not only add a burst of colour to your living room, but it will also create a vibrant and energetic feel. Take a look at the colour wheel and select three equally distributed hues in a triangular form.

Some colour combos we love at the moment:

•          Teal, magenta and yellow gold

•          Sunshine yellow, turquoise and burgundy

•          Pastel pink, pastel yellow and sky blue

Finally, have fun!  Your colour selection should reflect the atmosphere you want to create in your home. If you’re looking for inspiration, social media platforms and Pinterest are good places to start and will definitely get your creative juices flowing.

We want you to love the look and feel of your new zofa from the moment you set eyes on it (and sit on it of course). We’ll happily send you a box of fabric samples and who knows, we might throw a little something extra in with it too.
