COLOUR YOUR LIVING ROOM HAPPY! IMPROVE YOUR MENTAL HEALTH WITH THESE SIMPLE DESIGN CHOICES.

Improve your mental health with these design choices

Colour your living room happy! Improve your mental health with these simple design choices.

There are many things we can do to improve our mental health –long walks in the park, spending time with loved ones, writing gratitude lists, daily social media detoxes or even just eating more oranges! These are all pretty obvious though – what people don’t know is that the way we decorate our living space can subconsciously affect our mood and wellbeing.

Keep reading to discover ways in which we can decorate our living room to strengthen our serotonin!

De-clutter

Our number one tip is storage space. Studies have shown that clutter is linked to chronic stress, anxiety, and sleep deprivation. Ever heard of the quote ‘messy room, messy mind’? An untidy living space can generate more cortisol in your brain (stress hormone) without you even realising it. That’s why, we recommend investing in a large storage cabinet so when the room starts to get a little messy after a busy weekend, be it a family game of Rummikub or a bake-off binge watch – there’s more than enough space for you to throw everything in a container and pop the hoover on! We are loving this simple storage unit from IKEA that gives you the chance to display the items you love and shove the rest in the drawer – out of sight, out of mind.

Let in the Light

This is a no brainier– but just in case you forgot… let some light into your living room! Natural sunlight rapidly increases the levels of serotonin in our brains and puts us in a positive mood as a result. There are many different ways to bring light into the room including tactical use of mirrors, ambient light sources such as LED’s or fairy lights and most importantly, big windows.

Houseplants

Not only have studies shown that plants have soothing qualities, but they can reduce physiological and psychological stress. Investing in a houseplant to water and care for can also make you feel purposeful and divert your attention onto something positive and productive. Plants also improve air quality and your general focus. So, what are you waiting for? Off to the garden centre you go.

Colour psychology

Shades of blue and green can make you feel relaxed and calm. Purple can increase productivity. Yellow can spark feelings of happiness and red can help stimulate moods, counteracting depression. Overall – when choosing colour for your living room, think of bright cheerful and bubbly colours.

Weighted blanket

Ever heard of a weighted blanket? It’s a therapeutic blanket weighting around 5-30 pounds that is used to reduce anxiety. The pressure that falls upon your body when the blanket is in use, aims to provide a comforting sensation and has been proven to majorly reduce anxiety in individuals. Of course…

None of these tips are going to make all your problems magically disappear, but they’re definitely a step in the right direction. Buy a plant, paint you’re accent wall blue and put your dog’s toys in a drawer. It’s time to feel relaxed in your own home.

We want you to love the look and feel of your new zofa from the moment you set eyes on it (and sit on it of course). We’ll happily send you a box of fabric samples and who knows, we might throw a little something extra in with it too.
