Focus on yourself

In a world where it’s so easy to surrender to the Instagram trap and scroll aimlessly for hours comparing everything you post, from pictures to last night’s pudding, It’s essential that you set some time aside to focus on yourself and remember the things that make you happy. Hobbies are incredibly character-building and allow us to create connections with other people – they give us a sense of purpose.

It’s time you take some ‘me time’ to learn a new skill or even develop one you already have! We have provided several hobbies you can take up from the comfort of your own zofa.

So there are no excuses; Get on your zofa and start doing.

Just like we go to the gym to improve our physical health, we must take some time during the day to improve our mental health.

Studies have proven that those who meditate are less stressed, able to focus more, and generally have more well-being than those who don’t. This phenomenon began back in 500 BC and is now practiced by over 300 million people. Don’t get it twisted, meditation is not just saying ‘Ommmm’ with your legs crossed – it’s about quieting your mental chatter and taking charge of your thoughts, learning to be at peace in your mind when things get a little stressful, and most importantly, to relax.

If you’re up for it but don’t know where to begin, set aside 20 minutes of your day, download the app ‘Headspace’ and dive into the world of mindfulness and inner peace.

Get that book read

Leave your worries at platform 9 3⁄4 and escape to Hogwarts in ‘Harry Potter’, explore the debates of morality in ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’, delve into the histories of persecution in the ‘Tattooist of Auschwitz’ or rewire your thoughts with ‘The Rules of Thinking’ – whatever it is, do it with a cup of tea, a couple of custard creams and a warm blanket. You deserve it.

Bring back board games

Although the charm of a good old board game has diminished a little since the introduction of video games, nothing beats an intense family game of Monopoly. The best thing about board games is that they’re almost impossible to play alone – a great excuse to gather a group of friends for an intense game of Articulate, impress your date with your mastery chess skills or solve the murder mystery in Cluedo with your children.

Habla Español

Not only is Spanish a valuable language to learn, but it’s also relatively easy to pick up once you practice. Download the app ‘Duolingo’ for a free game-style learning approach to get you ‘hola’-ing in no time.

Start a scrapbook

Sometimes we can get caught up in the repetitive cycle of life and forget to express ourselves. Scrapbooking provides us with creative outlets to explore, design, and document our favourite things in life. There are no rules or limitations – unleash your inner artist! To get started, buy an album, glue, ribbons, print some photos, and get sticking.

Pop the tunes on

Believe it or not, listening to music is a hobby, and a healthy one to have too! Music improves our mood, memory, and pain tolerance. Kicking back on the sofa and shuffling a few of your favourite songs is a great way to unwind and helps you reconnect with yourself.

If you’re looking to expand your horizons, don’t just stick to your safe genres – do some exploring; there are 1,200 definable music subgenres out there… so get searching!

Rate your films

Whether you’re looking to zone out to an episode of the Simpsons or have set yourself up to be blown away by a Tarantino film, watching a bit of TV has always been a good way for us to switch off and escape reality for a few hours.

If you want to take your movie-watching a step further, get online and speak to people. The app “Letterboxd” is a social platform that allows you to showcase the films you’ve watched, write reviews, and compare your thoughts with others.

Get scribbling

No matter your age, there is nothing more satisfying than colouring in a whole picture without your pen spilling over the lines. Colouring helps us to alleviate stress and is the perfect hobby if you’re looking to develop your patience and focus skills. There are many adult colouring books available on amazon – a few of our favourites include ‘Amazing Patterns: Adult Colouring Book’ and ‘Hey You’re So Great’.

Enjoy the process!

We hope this has got your creative juices flowing and inspired you to take something on this year – there are thousands of different hobbies out there, and if this list doesn’t tickle your fancy – we guarantee something will. Remember, there’s something for everyone.

We want you to love the look and feel of your new zofa from the moment you set eyes on it (and sit on it of course). We’ll happily send you a box of fabric samples and who knows, we might throw a little something extra in with it too.
